Now or Never

It’s Sunday night. Already. How did that happen? And more importantly… How do I undo it? Not that I mind work, don’t get me wrong. Another few hours in book heaven, a.k.a B&N, always makes me feel good. I think it’s the smell of new books and coffee. It does weird things to my system. Happy things. :D

I think what really has me dreading Monday is the thought of another full week of work and activities and plans. Another full week of (warning: cliche up ahead) running around like a chicken with her head cut off. Because let’s face it, I’m one of the least organized people in the known world. It causes a lot of unnecessary headaches.

Hubby, in his infinite OCD/anal-ism *ahem* wisdom, has created a schedule he thinks might help me. Just trying to follow it makes me even more exhausted. Ha ha. Sad, huh? ;) What can I say? I’m a free spirit. I cannot be chained down by tasks written on paper!

I hoped to just crash this weekend. Veg, sleep, read. Recharge, basically. No such luck. I ended up far busier than I intended to be. Not bad busy. I got to spend time with my beloved nephews whom I adore. Got to hang out with a friend from the city who I haven’t seen in months. Still… it’s nearly Monday. And I got no vegging, reading, and hardly any sleeping done. When will I learn my lesson?

On the writing front… *sigh* Well there really is no writing front. I’ve had a really crummy writing week when it comes to productivity. I’m supposed to be working on a 20k novella. The idea I was trying to shape is just not working out. I think I hate it. Which is really really bad because it has to be done by January. I’m a little concerned, but not muchly. Just enough to make me crazy. On the other hand, I reopened my WIP to add another 1k or so. Hadn’t touched that in about a week or so. So it was a nice change of pace.

I think I’m going to go clean up and indulge in a book for a bit. I totally deserve it. ;)

Hope you all had a great weekend!

Can you believe it?!

I’m about to cry. This is so exciting.

I got my very first review!!!!! *screams like a maniac* Oh goodness, my neighbors are going to think I’m insane. lol

Cocktail Reviews has reviewed Cinematic Royalty! Check out some of the things they said:

With a sub-plot that is both touching and interesting, Cinematic Royalty is a must read. Set back in the day, which I must say is refreshing and spot on, I found myself transported back in time believing every word. Oh, the glamour! The decadence! I wanted to wear the clothes, saunter around the Whitmore Hotel in all my finery, and visit Bridget while on set.

[...] Be warned, this tale brought more than a tear to my eye. I’m not ashamed to admit I cried like a baby—for the sadness and the happiness.

Overwhelmed

Ever just have one of those weeks where you’re not quite sure if you’re going left or right? I feel that way this week. Between the new job, the book release, a new story on deadline, keeping my diet/weightloss in check, and other random things, I honestly feel like I’m drowning sometimes. A girl can only juggle so many balls! Unless of course, she’s got four hands, which I always wish I did. *sigh* Too bad.

I finally saw the season premiere of one of my very favorite shows, How I Met Your Mother. I missed it the night it came on because of my power being out. But it was hilarious, as I expected it to be. I love that show so much. It just reminds me of my friends and of stupid things that we do sometimes. :) I think it’s one of the best ‘friendship’ shows since “Friends”. There hasn’t  been true chemistry like that in a while. Aww… *cries* I miss sitcoms. Good television has definitely taken an interesting turn. Not that there aren’t some great things out there, but the topic of some of these shows lately leave me wondering. A remake of Bionic Woman? I don’t get it. *shrugs*

Either way, I’m anxiously awaiting the premiere of Scrubs. Hands down my very favorite show. I need to get all the seasons. I watch the reruns and just never get sick of it. I love those characters.

For those of you wondering, I’m still getting settled in at work. I’m doing ok, it’s tough remembering all the drink recipes and codes for the register and all. Then again, it’s only my second week. I assume they know it’ll take me a while.

As for writing, I have a short, 20k novella I have to get on ASAP. Its due in December and I haven’t written ONE word. *lazy bum* But at least I have a good idea where I’m going with it. I’ve just been too delusional from the exhaustion to think clearly. I’ll get it. ;)

Hope you all have had a great week so far.

Once again, for good measure:

Step into a world of glamour and fame where American youths are still raw from the war, music takes an edgier turn, and movie stars are practically royalty.

Charles Witmore is used to celebrities. As owner of the grand Winmont Hotel in Los Angeles, he has seen them come and go more times than he can count. But the experience is altogether different when silver screen starlet Bridget Phillips walks into his life and crashes into his heart. He’s absolutely starstruck. Her beauty is exactly as majestic as has been rumored, but he wonders about the many claims laid against the woman, who seems to be so shrouded in mystery.

Initially claimed by prejudice, he sees nothing more than the ice princess she presents, beautiful and stone cold. But, the more time she spends at his hotel, the more he begins to see there is more to her facade than meets the eye. Soon, she becomes the object of his affection, and in an amusing ploy, his two best friends, Betty and Eleanor, and his cute assistant Tessa, set up the matchmaking scheme of a lifetime.

But will Bridget’s dark secret keep Charles from his happily ever after?

Are You Kidding Me?

If I offer you cookies and milk will you forgive my tardiness with this post today? I promise I have a good reason. *bats eyelashes desperately*

Let me tell you a little something about my day before I go ahead and post the promised excerpt of my book, tbr tomorrow!!

Last night I fell asleep at like 9:30pm. For me, that is WAYYY early. I slept until like 10am today. I thought, uh oh. Not good. I might be getting sick. I only sleep like that when I get sick. I went to work, hoping the fresh air would help me snap to it. My brain was just completely malfunctioning. One girl gave me twenty cents and I stood there waiting like a total doofus for like ever for the 3 cents of the 13 she owed me. I thought the dimes were nickels!

Then I got home and realized our power was out. Huh. That’s weird. : Hubby and I called the electric company. They promised to send someone over. We waited. And waited. And waited some more. 2 1/2 hours later we call back. They say they’re not sending anyone out tonight. So… no dinner. And no light. And its dark. Umm yea. I’m ready to cry at this point. Happy freaking birthday Isabelle.

So in the end, we packed up and headed to the inlaws. That’s where I’m at right now. But I promised you an excerpt and I will deliver, darnit. I’m good for my word!

Ok, first of all. Let’s build excitement here! Because, I mean, this is really really awesome! :D This is my book! And it’s coming out TOMORROW! YAY!!!! We are still on for our blog party tomorrow too. ;) NO worries.

So here it is, your first peek:

Excerpt:

Star struck. That’s exactly how I felt when I first laid eyes on Bridget Phillips. Not exactly a feeling I was familiar with. I, Charles Witmore Esquire, businessman extraordinaire, never lost my composure, never got flustered. Countless celebrities walked the floors of my establishment, each more beautiful than the last, each glorious in their presence, larger than life. I remained in control, professional. Until she stepped through my hotel doors and changed everything.

I’m quite certain I’ll never forget that day. She strolled through the lobby with her eyes hidden behind smoky square frames. Each step of her heels clicked against the patterned marble floors. I stared, awed by the deliciously slow movement, hypnotized by the way her hips swayed from left to right with each purposeful stride.

At that moment, no one else stood in that room. The voices that filled the air only moments before vanished. All I could see was the flawless ivory skin of her neck, the dusty rose flush on high, rounded cheekbones. Her lips, caught in a photo-ready smile, made wicked promises no respectable woman would, tinted a bold crimson like the darkest wine. A maroon silk scarf with vibrant orange flowers covered her head. The silken material tied freely beneath her chin and left a peek of auburn curls against her neck. My fingers curled in anticipation. Every coherent thought centered on touching those curls, testing whether they were as soft and lush as they looked.

Restraint pulled me past the suffocating sea of physical sensation back to reality. I shook my head to clear the foggy thoughts. Logic told me I was not the first man she had affected in this way, nor would I be the last. I wasn’t blind to her cunning ways. I’d heard many things about the beguiling actress. Forbidden liaisons, scandalous affairs with the richest, most powerful men in Hollywood. Leading men were her style. Rugged, handsome pretenders that would look good on her arm at events and in the papers. In short, Bridget Phillips was the type of woman that stories could be spread about. That people wanted to spread stories about.

“Miss Phillips?” I cleared my throat, easing away the nervous lump that lodged there. She smelled of English Lavender and summer rain, a combination deadly to any man’s senses. She turned to look at me. Like a fiery flame traveling a million miles an hour, it struck me with a burning intensity right in the chest. I was smitten.

She removed her sunglasses, pressed them between long, elegant fingers sheathed in buttery cream leather gloves. Her rich chestnut eyes swept over me with careful scrutiny. When she blinked, dark lashes swept over her cheeks. Each move struck me as graceful; the choreographed action of a dancer who never ceased performing. I gawked at her, unable to rip my gaze away. Her beauty was effortless. Confidence oozed from each pore, tinged with just enough aloofness to make her a fascinating mystery.

I struggled to collect my thoughts. I felt awkward, completely out of place, a nervous teenager in front of the most popular girl in school. Get it together, Witmore, I coached. You are the owner of the most luxurious hotels in the United States. You’re well liked. Respected. I counted to ten, then backwards to one all in my head. I focused on breathing through my nose. None of it mattered. For the first time in my life, I was floored. She looked into my eyes, and I fell utterly and completely in love with her.

“Ah yes,” she said in a breathy whisper. “You must be Mr. Witmore. A pleasure, I’m sure.” Her plump lips perfectly formed each syllable. I watched them, mesmerized by their movement. Her voice caressed the air like soft velvet. I could have listened to it for all eternity. Something about it was musical, rhythmic, and enchanting. She was bewitching, plain and simple.

Through the haze of my thoughts, I somehow managed to reach out, pick up her gloved fingers and lay a delicate kiss upon them. I thanked the heavens for the ability to keep my composure, despite the violent thundering of my heart. “I am pleased to have you staying at my finest establishment, Miss Phillips,” I said with deceptive calm. “I truly hope you will find your stay comfortable and enjoyable. The reception desk is available twenty-four hours a day. They will be more than happy to handle all of your needs.”

I kept my usual business-like tone, knowing the speech by heart. It was what I did. What I excelled at. It was comforting to have something familiar to draw on when everything else in my world felt like it’d been tipped on its axis.

“What about you, Mr. Witmore?” she questioned. Her eyes looked back up at mine for a brief moment before she removed one, then both of her gloves. I glanced down at the bright red of her nail polish in stark contrast to her creamy ivory skin. My mouth went dry, the burn in my chest returned, and the calm, collected man flew out the window. This womanwith her pin-up looks, was some sort of poison.

“Me, Miss Phillips?”

“Yes,” she sighed, exasperated. “How would I go about contacting you? After all, if I am in any way displeased, I would much rather go to the management than the busboy. You understand now, don’t you?” I nodded my head, eager to please, brushing off the arrogance of her words. She was, after all, royalty of the absolute worst kind; a goddess of film, the black and white vixen of Hollywood who took the silver screen by storm.

“Here is my card.” I pushed shaky fingers into my breast pocket and pulled out the small paper square. “Feel free to contact me at any hour. My job is to make sure you have everything you desire.”

“Of course.” Her lips curved into a devilish smile. She reached over and took the card from my hand. Her skin grazed mine for the briefest of moments, but it was long enough to send a hot flush over my skin. After a brief inspection of the card’s content, she tucked it safely between herself and the bosom fabric of her dress. I tightened my jaw, forced my eyes to remain upon her face where they belonged.

She pulled out a cigarette. I pulled out a lighter. She looked up at me as I exposed the paper to the fire. In one swift movement, she removed the cigarette from her mouth, let it hang loose between her fingers. Without taking her eyes away from mine, she exhaled. I looked at her lips through a faint fog of smoke, lips puckered in a seductive pout that made my hands sweat. I forced myself to remember she was an esteemed guest.

“I’m going to retire,” she said with a wispy sigh. “It’s been an awful long trip, and I am beyond exhausted. Thank you for your hospitality, Mr. Witmore.” She placed the dark sunglasses back over her eyes and took another puff of her cigarette. With that, she turned to walk away toward the suite laid out for her, followed by three of my men carrying her suitcases.

I looked on until she disappeared from sight. My breath pushed against aching lungs. I would never be the same again.

Turtle Feet, Surfer's Beat

It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it.  ~Oscar Wilde

Every book affects us, changes us, molds us. We may not know it at the time, but in the end, we realize just what an impact it has made when days, months, even years after you find that a small moment replays in your mind. Huh, you may think to yourself, I read that somewhere once before. Books have the ability to really touch the human heart. A life changed.

Every so often, a book comes along that not only strives to change one heart, but change the world. And oh what a task it is! Which is why I’m so proud to give you a sneak peek into a very worthwhile book/cause by a person who truly is making a difference: Marina Kuperman. Let me tell you a little something about this amazing woman.

About 4 years ago, her husband received a full grant to get his Master’s in wild life management. This wonderful opportunity sent them to: COSTA RICA! They loved it so much, they decided to stay. And who could really blame them?

One day, while visiting Tamarindo Beach and Playa Grande she toured Las Baulas Marine National Park (a Leatherback Turtle Biological Center), where you can actually watch the turtles lay their eggs. A mother herself, she was struck suddenly by the notion that these animals might soon cease to exist.

Hence, Turtle Feet, Surfer’s Beat was born.

10% of all the proceeds go directly to saving the Leatherback Turtle and other marine animals.

The official publication date of ‘Turtle Feet, Surfer’s Beat’ is November 15, 2007.  But you can buy the ebook and read it now!!! or if you pre-order today you will get a kick-ass gift with your book just in time for the holiday season for helping out a good cause. – From Marina’s official website.

Interested? You should be! It’s a great cause! And check out the amazingly cute storyline:

PENELOPE LENNOX is in for the surprise of her life. No, make that two!

Thanks to her father’s photo assignment, Penelop e is dragged away from her comfortable life in suburbia and brought to Costa Rica.  In the process her boyfriend of two years decides he’s not into long distance relationships and dumps her two days before her trip.  However, broken-heartedness and dejection turn out to be the least of her concerns.  Upon arrival Penelope’s mother informs her that she’s been registered to do a two-week volunteer session at the Leatherback Turtle Biological Center.

The rundown dormitory-styled station is fully equipped with an overzealous conservationist, a biologist whose social skills resemble a hermit crab, thousands of mosquitoes, and a cockroach the size of a baseball.  Nevertheless, all is forgiven once Penelope has her first encounter with the prehistoric turtle and promises to do all she can to help save it from complete extinction.

But hang ten, dudes!  Penelope is about to get some unexpected help!  While patrolling the beach for poachers and other predators, Penelope gracelessly trips over the only branch sticking out of the sand and miraculously ends up in the arms of gorgeous but yet oh-so humble KENDALL BROWNE, Central America’s surf champ and most popular resident of Tamarindo Beach.

Kendall submerges Penelope into his world of wave riding and his lifetime goal to preserve marine life. Their combined determination leads them into a life-or-death situation with Costa Rica’s notorious black-market turtle poachers as they struggle to secure the turtles’ survival.

Not only has Marina written an adorable book: (check out the great excerpt for a taste) she’s gone a step further and created a real community of activists who care. Surfers, musicians, actors, kooky scientists and more all united for a common cause.

More than anything else, she’s aimed this world changing message at teens, because teens are in fact, our future. If we can educate them and teach them now, their future actions can mean a safer, cleaner, more wonderful world. Bravo Marina! You should be very proud.

Na-cho Cheese

I just stuffed my face with a homemade, makeshift cheesedip. It had some leftover turkey ground meat. Peppers. Cheddar, American and Pepperjack cheese. Argh. I sooo should not have eaten that. But I couldn’t help it! I’m in one of those junk food craving moods. *sigh* I should have hit the gym, I bet it would have kicked the craving, but I had too much to do. Now I feel like a slacker. *wails* I gotta get up early and jog. Or hit the gym like 6 times tomorrow. Ha ha. I’m such a weekend warrior. :-P

I had a really great day at work today! I ran the register. I’m really getting the hang of it, finally. There are tons of codes which I can’t for my life remember. The people who already work there shout them out like times tables! It’s amazing. I was soo impressed. I fumbled a bit, but people are generally kind as long as you keep your cool and smile. Some people told me not to worry that I was doing great, which of course had me smiling like an idiot. :D And oh yea, I got a tip! WOOT! I felt so accomplished!

On another note, I’m really excited because I’ve got some neat ideas in store for my WIP. Its going to take a while for me to get myself together, particularly because I’m scheduled to work 4 days next week, and I’ve got to get this house in order, so my writing time will be a bit less. But that’s ok. All in its time. It’ll get done. I’m trying not to stress too much over it. *Can you see my left eye twitching?*

I’m really tired tonight, so I’m just working on fixing up the chapter I wrote last night and adding a few things I missed. Then I think I’m crawling into bed and reading for a while before passing out. It’s almost Friday. YES!

Today’s art, which I found kind of adorable, came from Magicyoyo271 @ deviantart.

Check out the Sidebar

I finally added Cinematic Royalty‘s cover to my sidebar, with a little note to look out for it. It’s coming this month people! YAY! :D

I’m enjoying today, my day off. I go back to work tomorrow. But I was able to stay up really late last night writing because I could sleep in today. That’s good stuff right there. I’m exhausted, granted, but I got a lot done. Finished another chapter in my WIP. *does happy dance* Book 2 is taking shape nicely. The writing doesn’t feel as tight or pretty as in Book 1, but let’s not forget that I worked on Book 1 for like 7 months. This one will be good, once I get a chance to go back and edit the actual words (which right now seem choppy and rushed).

The actual story is coming along though! And the dialogue is tight! Which excites me. My characters have completely taken over! :D Btw, I’m completely enamored by my hero. He’s completely grown up to be exactly who I imagined he could be. *faints* He’s so freaking gorgeous.

Today’s art is a little something that’s been inspiring me. Everything about the picture, the lighting, the mood, the look in her eyes… it’s naughty and beautiful all at once. Great photography by mehmeturgut @ deviantart. *fans herself*

First Day Jitters

I had my first training day today at the Cafe! So far, I met my first regular, (who has promised to torture me endlessly), got my first tip, and met some interesting characters. :D I’m going to have to bring a tiny notebook with me to take notes on some of the funny people I’m going to come across. Bookstores do draw in some interesting people, don’t they? ;) We all know about that. lol

My next training day is Thursday, so yay! I’m excited.

I’m going to spend the rest of the afternoon trying to be productive. Cleaning, writing, and cooking. ;) I have a great scene in mind for my WIP, so I really should try and get it down before it fades. In the meantime, enjoy today’s art piece, will ya?

It’s another one from girltripped‘s gallery which kind of matches yesterday’s theme. That corset rocks and I swear it has such a Scarlet O’Hara look I just couldn’t include it! :D I love it.
