So come by! We’re hanging out and drinking the Brew.
I’m having my very own Midnight Brew at the Midnight Moon Cafe Blog this Thursday, April 30th! I’ll be answering some fun questions about my favorite paranormal reads/authors, a few paranormal ideas I have in store for the future and my newest release, Surfacing, published with Freya’s Bower.
I’ll be giving away a free copy of Surfacing to one lucky reader, so come on by and drink the brew!

I’m writing again! Bits and pieces but still making forward progress! This is majorly thrilling! Not to mention the flash of inspiration I had in the shower yesterday for a scene that was giving me some grief.
I think the muse is just about ready to get back to work. Know how I can tell? I started reading again. It’s been impossible to catch my attention for months but last night I started a book and am now 50 pgs in. I think I’m back in business!
From an interview with author of Closing Arguments and Atlantis Cranks Need Not Apply, Miss Sarah Avery.
“To paraphrase Tolkien, anyone who objects to escapism on principle is, at heart, a jailer.
But that’s not the whole story, either. You know that Marianne Moore aphorism about writing imaginary gardens with real toads in them? If your toads aren’t real enough, nobody can escape into your imaginary garden. So an escapist also has to be able to write like a realist.”
Such a fantastic quote- and so true! A reason I love fantasy is because it’s escapist in nature. However if I can’t believe in the characters, really feel their trials and believe they breathe and cry, then the author will lose me. If you want to read more of the great interview, go here.
There’s a fun chat happening at my new publisher, Drollerie Press! You should all stop by. There’s talk about their upcoming anthologies and there will be free ebooks given away!
It’s Excerpt Monday at Romance Divas and this week I’m playing along! Here’s an excerpt from my latest novella, Surfacing:
The heat of his stare bores through me. When I refilled his drink he made it a point to let his fingers graze mine. Every time my blood rushed. Every time it sparked a need in me I’d never experienced. Some dormant part of my soul awoke with each innocent touch until I wanted more—needed more. An addict, that’s what I’d become. I awoke in the morning with his silver bullet eyes in my mind and wasn’t content until I arrived at the diner after school and had that first brush of his fingertips against my skin. He always looked to gauge my reaction. I never let on just how alive I became with every touch. But he knew. Somehow, he always knew.
I refused to speak until I could make sense of what he said to me. Still, no matter how hard I tried to understand, I couldn’t wrap my head around it. “What are you studying anyway?” I’d asked him, wanting an answer to my growing frustration. Why wouldn’t he kiss me? Or ask me on a date? I knew he wanted to. But his studies, he always said, his research came first. “Tell me,” I begged. “If it’s the reason we can’t be together I want to know.” He said just one word. One simple, life-altering word. “You.”

It looks like Karen Erickson and I share an interest (and a crush)! Adam Lambert’s performance on American Idol gave me goosebumps. The boy’s voice is just magical. Honestly, I still get giddy thinking about his version of Track of my Tears. I’m almost rooting for him to lose though, sad as it is. He’s just so creative and all that creativity is going to be stifled by the money making machine known as 19 productions. He’d have a better chance if he came in like third or fourth, a la Chris Daughtry. Then he could still use the drive of AI and do his own thing- create some really amazing music, you know? I’m dying for him to sing some Aerosmith on the show. I think he would KILL some Steven Tyler music like it’s nobody’s business. Anyway, check out Karen’s post. She has Adam’s performance on video!!! It’s amazing.
I’m also really thrilled to report that last night, while Peanut had naptime (from 8pm-10pm) I actually wrote an entire page on my manuscript. A whole page!!!!! Can you believe it? I’m thrilled. Granted, it’s a little all over the place cause my brain is fried but still I feel productive which is always a big plus.
And just cause he’s adorable, I’m leaving you with a pic of Peanut sleeping with daddy:
Ever listened to a song that took you back to a very specific place and time? Today, while trying to rock Peanut to sleep and get some cleaning done, I let Rhapsody 90s Radio play.
Oh man, do I love that station. So much fantastic music.
A few songs played that I hummed along to, but then a very familiar drum line began and I immediately got giddy. Crash Into Me by Dave Matthews started to play and that smooth buttery voice came on over the speakers and well… I was a goner. That song represents so much for me.
It played on the Pilot episode of one of my favorite shows, Roswell, back in 1999. The song was so magical, it opened up a whole world of music for me and until this day it’s just a hopelessly romantic song. I can’t help but see Max and Liz (the main characters) at the top of that hill, awkward and awestruck, wanting to jump head first into love. And then, the flash of light and fire behind them before it (and they) fizzle out and walk away. So perfectly placed. Check it out:
I’ve always said that when I write, I’m a very visual person. I can’t help but hope that I can create moments like this. Moments that stick with the reader, that create such a vivid picture that hours or even days later, the reader is still struck by that particular scene. By how it made them feel. It’s why music is such an essential part to what I do. Soundtracks are so important to create mood. I’m so going to pop this eppy into the DVD player.
